Trying to connect a dry vaporizer to glass can get confusing fast. There are different joint sizes, male and female fittings, ground glass connections, reducers, whip adapters, and device-specific WPAs. If you're new to all this, the terminology alone can make it feel more complicated than it really is.

This guide is the plain-English version. We’ll cover the common glass sizes, what male and female actually mean, why ground glass matters, and the different ways to connect a vaporizer to a waterpipe without guessing your way into the wrong setup.

The three common glass joint sizes

The three most common glass joint sizes you’ll run into are 10mm, 14mm, and 18mm. If you shop around enough, you may also see some sellers refer to 14mm as 14.4mm and 18mm as 19mm. For our purposes, those are generally treated as interchangeable in the dry vaporizer world, since standard glass joints use the same basic taper and the fit is what matters most in real-world use.

Of the three sizes, 14mm has become a very common middle ground across the industry, especially on smaller glass and modern portable-friendly pieces. 10mm is showing up more often on tiny bubblers and certain compact setups. 18mm is still extremely common, especially on larger pieces and older designs, and I still prefer it for versatility.

Why? An 18mm female joint gives you room to step down with a reducer when needed, which makes it easier to use a wider range of adapters later. Even though 14mm is increasingly common, 18mm female glass still gives you a nice “master key” starting point for a lot of setups.

Male vs female: what it actually means

This part is simpler than people make it sound. A male joint fits into a female joint.

More precisely, the male joint is smaller and usually has the frosted ground glass on the outside of the shaft. The female joint is larger and typically has the frosted ground glass on the inside of the opening.

One of the easiest mistakes beginners make is focusing only on the joint size and forgetting about orientation. A 14mm joint still needs to be the right kind of 14mm joint. A 14mm male adapter fits a 14mm female joint on your glass. If both parts are male or both are female, you still do not have a working connection.

In general, for dry herb vaporizers and smoking accessories, I usually prefer a female joint on the glass and a male joint on the adapter. That gives a cleaner vapor path and tends to keep resin from building up as badly on the exposed ground glass of the joint.

Why ground glass matters

When people say ground glass, they’re talking about the frosted mating surface on the glass joint. That frosted finish is important because it helps create the proper fit between two glass parts that are meant to go together.

If you’re using glass-on-glass connections, you generally want proper ground glass fittings instead of smooth glass fittings. Ground glass is the standard for a reason. It fits properly, seals properly, and is what these joints are designed around. Moreover, smooth glass can ’stick’ together making it extremely difficult, or sometimes impossible, to disconnect when desired.

It’s also worth keeping the frosted ground glass as clean as you reasonably can. Try not to let reclaim or resin build up heavily on those frosted surfaces. If it sits too long, it can become a pain to clean and can make the joint feel sticky over time. When disconnecting glass, always support both pieces and use a gentle twist if needed instead of yanking them apart.

Why 18mm female glass is still my favorite starting point

Even though 14mm is becoming more standardized across the industry, I still like 18mm female glass as the most versatile starting point. The larger joint tends to be a bit beefier, increasing durability, and it gives you more room to adapt downward when needed.

That’s where reducers come in. An 18mm male to 14mm female reducer is a very common adapter and opens the door to using smaller 14mm accessories on an 18mm piece. The opposite exists too, but it’s far less common. So if you want one flexible baseline setup, I’d rather start with 18mm female glass and step down from there as needed.

The main ways to connect a dry vaporizer to glass

There isn’t just one way to do it, and that’s part of why beginners get overwhelmed. In practice, there are a few common paths.

1) A rigid, device-specific waterpipe adapter

This is usually the cleanest option when one exists for your vaporizer. A dedicated WPA is made specifically for that device, so the fit is more direct and the setup often feels more solid. If you plan to use a smaller vertical piece one-handed or want the vaporizer to sit securely on the glass, a rigid adapter usually makes more sense than a flexible one.

2) A flexible universal-style adapter

Not every vaporizer has a dedicated waterpipe adapter available, and that’s where a flexible option becomes useful. Our Nearly Universal Waterpipe Adapter is designed for exactly that kind of problem. It’s made from silicone, which gives it a forgiving fit over many OEM mouthpieces, and includes 14mm and 18mm male sections so it can work with a variety of waterpipes and glass pieces.

The medium version is especially handy because the opening is oblong and flexible, so it can conform to many mouthpiece shapes instead of only working on perfectly round ones. It also makes sense when you want one adapter that can work across multiple vaporizers instead of buying a separate rigid WPA for each device.

If there’s no OEM waterpipe adapter available for your vape, or you want one adapter that can serve more than one device, this is the kind of solution that starts making a lot of sense.

3) A whip-to-waterpipe adapter

For whip-style vaporizers, a whip to waterpipe adapter is another very popular connection method. Instead of adapting the mouthpiece directly, you run the whip to a glass fitting and connect that to your waterpipe. We also offer a premium glass whip to 14mm waterpipe adapter made by JoDa Glassworks, which is a nice option for people who prefer a glass solution for whip-based setups.

Glass can be used dry or with water

Even though people often think of a waterpipe as automatically meaning water, glass can be used either dry or with water. Both have their place.

ℹ️ Pro Tip

A 12mm deep basket screen placed inside an 18mm male joint makes a great secondary debris catcher. It helps catch herb that slips past the vape’s main screen, which can keep your water cleaner for longer.

Using water can help cool and moisturize the vapor, which many people find more comfortable. On the other hand, colder glass and water can also condense some of the vapor and leave more reclaim behind in the piece, as well as increase the harsh throat feel of the hit. Dry glass keeps the setup simpler and can preserve more flavor, while water tends to smooth things out. Which one is “better” really depends on what you’re vaporizing, what kind of hit you want, and what mood you’re in.

Another useful tip is to think about where the mess is going. Even a good vaporizer screen can let a bit of debris sneak through, especially if your grind is fine or the load gets stirred around during use. A simple secondary screen downstream can help keep that material out of the water and out of the glass piece.

If you already have an 18mm male section in the setup, this is one of those little upgrades that costs very little but improves the experience more than most people expect. It is also one of those details newer users usually do not think about until somebody shows them.

Final thoughts

If you’re just getting started, don’t let the terminology scare you off. Once you understand the three common sizes, the difference between male and female joints, and why ground glass matters, the whole picture starts to make a lot more sense.

If you want the shortest version, it’s this: 14mm is very common today, but 18mm female glass still gives you the most versatility. A rigid device-specific WPA is often the cleanest solution when one exists, and a flexible adapter like the Nearly Universal Waterpipe Adapter becomes really useful when it doesn’t.

Two people can use the same vaporizer, same grind, same temperature, and still get a different result.

A big reason is one simple choice: dosing capsules vs loose pack.

This post is the practical overview: what’s actually happening in the oven, why each workflow behaves differently, and how to get the best results from both.

First: dosing capsules are not universal

Different dry herb vaporizers have different oven dimensions and different heater designs. That’s why many brands make dosing capsules that are specific to their device.

Some manufacturers reuse the same capsule across multiple models in their lineup. Others change capsule size and shape between devices.

One of the most common capsule ecosystems people run is Storz & Bickel dosing capsules. Within the S&B lineup, their capsules are designed to work across their devices (some take them directly, and some setups use an adapter or reducer-style part). Outside of a given brand’s ecosystem, capsule compatibility becomes much more device-specific.

Other brands vary a lot. Companies like Healthy Rips, Wolkenkraft, POTV, XMAX, AirVape, and others sometimes share a capsule size across multiple models, and other times use different capsule sizes depending on the device.

There are also more “universal-ish” sizes that show up across multiple brands. A common example is the 10mm class of dosing capsules (often closer to ~10.5mm in practice), which can fit a handful of popular portables that share similar oven dimensions.

What a dosing capsule actually does

A metal dosing capsule does three main things:

1) It acts like a secondary screen

Herb stays contained inside the capsule. That helps keep larger bits of ground material from escaping and clogging your vaporizer’s primary screen. Less debris migration usually means less screen drama, especially when you’re on the go.

2) It adds thermal mass (and changes how heat reaches the herb)

Metal absorbs heat, holds it, then releases it back into the load. That can increase the conduction component of the session, because the capsule itself becomes a heated object surrounding the herb. It also means the capsule must heat soak first, which affects ramp time (more on that below).

3) It enables a fast, organized workflow

Pre-fill a set of capsules and reload quickly without making a mess. Capsules are also one of the easiest ways to keep track of what’s what: which capsules are fresh and ready to go, and which are spent (already extracted) and can be emptied later. That sounds trivial until you’ve tried to reload in a hurry, making a mess trying to pour ground herbs into an oven with little to no lighting to see what you’re doing.

Capsule materials: yes, it matters

Different brands use different materials for their capsules, and that changes thermal behavior.

One notable example: the AirVape Legacy Pro dosing capsules are 24k gold plated stainless steel (gold plating over stainless), and they are listed as compatible only with the Legacy Pro.

Whether it’s stainless, aluminum, titanium, or plated steel, the takeaway is that material and construction can change how the session behaves. Some capsules heat up faster, some hold heat longer once they’re hot, and some are more likely to impart a roasted flavor to the vapor at higher temps because the herb is sitting inside a hot metal shell for the entire session.

When dosing capsules win

1) Thorough extraction for session-style vaping

Once a capsule is fully heat soaked, it tends to deliver a stable, repeatable session. That’s great when you want a full extraction without babysitting the load.

2) Keeping the primary screen cleaner (especially away from home)

If you’re out for the day, capsules help keep the oven cleaner and reduce how often you need to deal with your vaporizer’s primary screen.

3) Organization: preload, separate fresh vs spent

Capsules turn “loading” into a simple swap. If you use capsules regularly, a good workflow usually includes a way to fill capsules cleanly and consistently, a way to carry fresh capsules, and a way to stash spent capsules separately.

Build a capsule workflow (the part that makes capsules actually enjoyable)

If you’ve tried dosing capsules and thought “meh,” it’s usually not the capsules. It’s the workflow.

Most of the frustration comes from three things: filling capsules slowly or messily, not having a clean way to carry fresh capsules, and not having a separate place to stash spent capsules. Once you solve those, dosing capsules stop feeling like a chore and start feeling like the whole point.

Here’s the simple setup that works for most people:

1) A loading tray that fits your capsule size
This keeps capsules upright, makes filling faster, and helps prevent wasted herb and mess on the table.

2) A dedicated caddy/insert for fresh capsules
Preload what you need for the day and you’re done. No grinder juggling in a dark parking lot.

3) A separate holder for spent capsules
This is the underrated part. Being able to keep “fresh” and “spent” separated makes everything easier, especially on longer days.

When loose pack wins (and why it’s worth doing at home)

Loose pack removes two things that capsules add: the thermal mass of the metal capsule and the metal barrier between the herb and the oven’s heat source. That’s why loose pack often wins in two specific scenarios:

1) Flavor chasing

If your goal is maximum flavor clarity, loose pack usually has the edge. Hot air and radiant heat can interact with the herb more directly, and there’s no hot metal shell surrounding the load. Capsules can still taste great, but they are more likely to impart a roasted flavor as temps climb, especially with longer sessions.

2) Faster extraction and faster ramp

A capsule has to heat up first. That means some of the oven’s heat goes into warming the capsule before the herb hits its stride. With loose pack, the session often comes online faster, and extraction can feel more immediate because there’s less heat being “buffered” by metal.

Pro tips that actually move the needle

Pro tip 1: The capsule heat-soak ramp (flavor first, performance later)

For optimal performance and extraction when using dosing capsules, try this:

Load your capsule into the vape

Turn on and set temp to a lower temperature such as 330°F / 165°C

Hold for a few minutes and savor the flavor (you may get minimal vapor production, but you’ll taste it)

Then step up to your preferred temperature range for extraction

This gets the capsule fully heat soaked before you demand big performance from it, which improves consistency and efficiency.

Pro tip 2: Pack capsules a bit more compact (but don’t choke airflow)

A dosing capsule generally performs best when the herb is packed slightly more compact than a typical loose pack, since the capsule is a conduction-heavy environment and contact helps heat transfer efficiently through the load. Just don’t crush it into a brick: if airflow gets restricted, you lose the benefit. Aim for a moderately dense pack that’s firm enough to hold together without turning into a plug.

Bonus tip: using an empty capsule as a microdosing spacer (device-dependent)

If your oven is larger than the tiny amount you want to run, you can sometimes use an empty dosing capsule as a simple spacer. Load a small amount of herb loose in the oven, then place an empty capsule on top to gently hold the herb down and take up extra space. This only works if the capsule fits your oven well and doesn’t block airflow. Don’t force anything. If the capsule binds, rattles excessively, or makes draw resistance worse, skip it. Pay attention to how your device heats; if your vaporizer has a heater or sensor area that shouldn’t be covered, don’t cover it.

The trade-offs and gotchas

Draw resistance can increase with capsules

Some devices feel tighter with capsules. Common causes include the capsule hole pattern, a grind that’s too fine, packing the capsule too tight, or how that capsule seats in that particular oven. If it feels restrictive, try a slightly coarser grind, a slightly lighter pack, and use the heat-soak ramp above.

Capsule sessions can run longer

Thermal mass usually means a slower initial ramp, a more stable mid-session extraction, and a longer time-to-finish. That’s often a feature, not a bug, but it’s good to know going in.

Wrap-up (and a quick note if you don’t see your vape listed)

Dosing capsules and loose pack both have their place. If you want maximum flavor and a faster ramp at home, loose pack usually wins. If you want clean reloads, better organization, and less screen mess on the go, dosing capsules are hard to beat.

And one last thing that’s worth saying out loud: capsule dimensions and oven geometry vary a lot. If you don’t see a loading tray, caddy, or insert listed for your specific vaporizer or capsule size, that doesn’t mean it can’t exist. It usually just means I haven’t built that exact variant yet.

For almost a decade we’ve been printing, tweaking, and shipping out widgets from a workshop that still smells faintly of melted filament, fresh coffee… and sometimes other herbs, haha. Every scoop, every caddy insert, every loading tray or case you’ve unboxed has come out of that space or from a like-minded indie maker we trust. Advertising dollars never felt as personal as a heartfelt “thank you” to our customers. So instead of feeding the ad-machine, we built our own gift-loop: a Loyalty Rewards Program that hands the rewards straight back to the people who keep us printing - you.

Why launch rewards now?

Two big reasons. First, word of mouth beats algorithms - especially when certain social platforms shadow-ban anything resembling a tobacco-vaporizer product. Second, our small-batch model keeps prices lean but margins don’t always leave room for flash sales or big-box wholesale discounts. Points let us reward repeat customers and keep the shop sustainable. It’s a true win-win.

How it works

Sign in to delta3dstudios.com

Click the blue Rewards widget floating on the right side of your screen

Inside that panel you can track your points, claim discounts, grab your referral link, or fire off a quick quiz

You’ll bank 10 points for every $1 you spend on products, then top up your balance with what we call “side quests”: follow or tag us on Instagram, tag @Delta3DStudios in a Bluesky post, drop a picture on Reddit, answer a one-question quiz - each action earns a bonus. Better yet, refer a friend (or ten) and they get 5 % off their first order while you collect 2 points per $1 they spend. And yes - you can even convert points on the fly directly into dollar discounts at checkout (250 pts = $1 off; min. cart $20)!

Today’s catalog (we’ll keep adding more)

50 pts → Vinyl Sticker

150 pts → PETG Scoop-n-Scrape

1000 pts → TightVac Mini Debowler insert

1500 pts → $10 off next purchase (min. $25 cart)

4000 pts → Full Vape Spittoon kit (just cover shipping)

5000 pts → $25 off coupon (min. $25 cart)

Retroactive points for the OG crew

We don’t want anyone to feel left out. If you placed an order between January 2015 and June 2025, head to the Retroactive Points Claim form and we’ll credit 2 points for every pre-launch dollar you spent (excluding shipping). No receipts required - just the email you used at checkout (and any notes you’d like to add). We’ll dig through our archives and drop your points in 7-14 days, because loyalty should count retroactively, too!

The fine print (and the fun stuff)

Points never turn into cash, coupons don’t stack, and accounts with fewer than 200 pts and no activity for 12 months may be erased to make room for active members. For full details, read our Rewards Program Terms & Conditions here.

But the fun doesn’t stop there:

Spotted in the wild bonuses when we see your gear on social media

Flash quizzes with mystery point payouts

Double-points weekends and surprise giveaways

$25 cart)

We’ll shuffle new rewards in and retire old ones - so check back often to see what’s fresh in the rewards catalog!

The Evolution of Delta 3D Studios’ Design Process

At Delta 3D Studios, we believe that great products don’t just happen - they’re earned through a rigorous, iterative process that balances innovation, efficiency, and sustainability. Whether we’re finalizing a product, modifying an existing design, or prototyping something new, our goal is the same: deliver a perfect fit and lasting performance with minimal waste.

1. Measure & Mock‑Up

Every project begins with measurements of the existing component or raw material - this could be a popular vaporizer, piece of an appliance, gym equipment, or any off‑the‑shelf part necessary. We mock up a rough 3D profile in CAD, blocking out the core geometry and defining how our design will interface. From there, we refine core features in CAD - sketching and iterating until the concept fully takes shape and (hopefully) fits as intended. By reusing existing components wherever possible, we avoid reinventing the wheel and focus our efforts on making the functional item

"We often don't even know what the finished item looks like until we begin sketching it out in CAD!"

2. Rapid Test‑Slice Prototyping

To accelerate development and minimize material waste, we use test slices - small cross‑sections of the design to confirm critical fits and tolerances before committing to larger prints. Once we finish sketching out a rough draft of the design, our next objective is to confirm the part fits in real life by generating thin 'test slices' and printing them often using an eco‑friendly, biodegradable plastic when possible to further reduce waste.

3. Cutaway Prototype Analysis

Once the test slice verifies the basic profile, we produce a ¾ cutaway prototype to inspect internal geometry, snap‑fits, and clearances. We insert the device or component into the cutaway to check alignment and evaluate stress points and wear‑in behavior under simulated use, ensuring all elements lock together smoothly before moving forward.

"Seeing how the parts interlock in a physical cutaway is crucial - it reveals issues no CAD view ever could."

4. Full‑Scale Prototyping & Iteration

With confidence in the fit, we finalize the CAD model and print the first full‑scale prototype. We then review the prototype’s form, fit, and function, apply cosmetic and ergonomic tweaks, and iterate as needed - sometimes revisiting major changes based on full‑scale testing.

"Even after a perfect print, we totally will revise the design. Our commitment is to excellence - not speed."

5. Torture‑Testing & Longevity Validation

Quality is in our DNA. We refuse to sell products that can fail after only a few uses - so we put every prototype and production part through real‑world trials. We subject components to heat cycles, impact tests, bending, and long‑term outdoor exposure, while field testing keeps them in rotation for months or even years. We also welcome customer feedback - encouraging users to send photos of any failures so we can analyze the point of breakage and engineer solutions for future customers. This relentless cycle of abuse and improvement ensures our accessories stand to use and abuse.

"Even when a prototype looks spot-on, we’ll tweak it again - we’re all about getting it right, not rushing it."

6. Final Verification & Launch

After we are satisfied with the fit and function of a product, we publish it to our website and closely monitor feedback from early adopters. We tweak the design based on customer input and discuss what they’d like to see in a potential revision, ensuring continuous improvement and customer satisfaction.

Our Passion & Your Ideas

We live for the thrill of creation - from the spark of an idea to the tactile joy of holding the first physical prototype. Customer suggestions spark our best innovations, and we’re always eager to tackle new challenges. Have a custom request or an idea that could improve your life? Reach out and let’s make it happen!

When it comes to 3D printing, color choices for PETG filament are usually pretty basic—solid black, white, gray, and a handful of primary colors. Finding something truly unique is rare. That’s why we’re excited to introduce Shadow Iridium, a limited edition deep gunmetal blue filament with a subtle, almost magical shimmer. It’s stealthy, it’s striking, and it’s only available for a limited time.

A Color That’s Hard to Describe—But Impossible to Ignore

At first glance, Shadow Iridium looks almost black, making it perfect for anyone who prefers sleek, understated designs. But take it into the sunlight, and you’ll notice an ultra-fine sparkle that shifts between deep blue and metallic gunmetal. It’s not flashy or over-the-top—just an elegant, refined glisten that adds depth and dimension to your prints.

Why This Filament Stands Out

A True Alternative to Black – If you love stealthy colors but are tired of everything being jet black, this filament offers a sophisticated alternative.

Layer Lines? What Layer Lines? – The deep hue and subtle sparkle help disguise layer lines better than many standard PETG colors.

Prints Perfectly, Every Time – We’ve tested Shadow Iridium extensively, and it prints flawlessly with no warping, flow issues, or inconsistencies.

A Limited Run—Get It While You Can

Since this filament is sourced from a specialty supplier, its long-term availability is uncertain. If it proves popular, we may stock up—but there’s no guarantee it will be around forever. If you want to get your hands on Shadow Iridium, now’s the time!

Want More Unique Colors? Let Us Know!

We love bringing unique materials to the shop, and we’re open to expanding our filament selection. If there’s a specific color you’d love to see, reach out! We take customer feedback seriously, and who knows? Your suggestion might just be the next special edition.

Committed to Quality: The Delta 3D Studios Way

At Delta 3D Studios, every design starts the same way: with an idea. But turning that idea into a finished product isn’t as simple as hitting “print” on a 3D printer. It’s a process—a hands-on journey of refinement, testing, and constant tweaking to make sure the final product not only works, but works beautifully. It’s all about the details.

We’ll be the first to admit that 3D printing isn’t a perfect science. Even with the most advanced printers and carefully selected materials, there are variables that can slip in—small differences between machines, minute shifts in environmental conditions, or slight variations in filament batches. Sometimes these factors result in unexpected outcomes: a latch might be too tight, a hinge may not snap closed just right, or the final fit doesn’t meet our standards.

That’s why we put so much emphasis on testing, learning, and improving. Before finalizing any design, we’ll often print a cutaway version of the part. This gives us a clear view of how everything fits together and lets us catch those tiny misalignments that might otherwise go unnoticed. It’s not just about getting a prototype to look good in CAD—it’s about holding it in our hands, feeling how the parts move, and seeing how they interact under real-world conditions. This hands-on approach is what ensures our designs meet our strict quality standards before we even think about offering them for sale.

Material choice is another crucial piece of the puzzle. Simple functional pieces often start with a reliable workhorse like PETG, which is durable and versatile. But when a project calls for something more specialized—like parts that need to withstand high temperatures or handle food-safe applications—we turn to materials like stainless steel, silicone, or other high-performance options. Once we select the right material, we don’t just assume it will work perfectly. We push it to its limits, performing what we call “destruction testing.” That means heating it up, bending it, breaking it—whatever it takes to find weaknesses and fix them before the product goes live.

Even the way we print the parts is carefully considered. Orientation on the print bed, slicer settings, support structures—every detail affects the final product’s strength and functionality. It’s not just about hitting “go” and hoping for the best. It’s about understanding the nuances of the technology and using that knowledge to deliver the best possible results. We know that every print is a test, and every test teaches us something new.

What really sets us apart is how we handle those moments when something doesn’t go as planned. If a customer receives a product that doesn’t fit or function as it should, we don’t shrug it off. We dig into the issue, figure out what went wrong, and use that information to make the next iteration better. It’s not about pretending that mistakes never happen—it’s about making sure that when they do, we learn from them and deliver an even stronger, more reliable product the next time. In this way, every customer interaction becomes a chance to improve, refine, and keep raising the bar.

At Delta 3D Studios, we’re not just creating products. We’re crafting solutions. We’re building trust. And we’re constantly improving—so that every product you receive is not only functional and reliable, but a reflection of our commitment to quality.
